Elysian is sited on a special piece of Auckland land, the origins of which can be traced back to the early years of Parnell's inception. Parnell is New Zealand's oldest suburb and its official establishment dates back to 1841 through early European settlers.

In 1899, the site of Elysian was home to Captain William Joseph Newton - a Master Mariner from Liverpool, England who worked in the service of the Union Steam Ship Company and eventually appointed Master of the Mahinapua. A seafaring man, he chose to build his home adjacent to Campbell's Point looking out to the sea of which he devoted much of his life. And it's here where he spent the rest of his life along with his family until the mid 1930's.

A new lease of life

The ensuing years have seen families make this villa their home, restoring and renovating along the way to keep in step with modern living. Today, Captain Newton's villa will been given a new lease of life in the country resort town of Matakana serving as boutique accommodation for travelling locals and international visitors to enjoy.

The site of 25 Balfour Road will soon be ready for its next chapter. Elysian will provide homes that reflect a new era of modern living in a historical, character suburb. The original shoreline may have changed over years, but the enduring character of Parnell remains.
